Why Sedation Dentistry Matters

Comfort, Matched Exactly to Your Child

If your child needs a little extra help to get through a procedure comfortably, you're not alone, and we're ready. We offer a full range of comfort options, from laughing gas to hospital-based general anesthesia, so your child receives exactly the care they need, matched to their age, their comfort level, and the procedure ahead.

You're Never Handed Off to Someone New

Every comfort option we offer, from laughing gas to general anesthesia, is supported by an anesthesiologist who's part of our own team. Your child is cared for by people who already know them, with the same standard of monitoring and safety at every level.

Extra Support When It's Needed Most

For children who need more complex care, our doctors hold hospital privileges at Kaiser Oakland and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Even in a hospital setting, your child is cared for by the same team you already trust.

Nothing More Than Your Child Actually Needs

We always start with the gentlest option that will keep your child safe and comfortable. Your child's plan is built around what they specifically need, never a default we reach for first.

A Decision We Make Together

We consider your child's age, comfort level, the procedure itself, and their health history, and we walk you through our thinking every step of the way. You'll always understand why we're recommending a particular option, not just what it involves.

Financial Information

Let's Talk About the Financial Side

We'll help you make sense of your insurance benefits so there are no surprises. Because every plan is different, we encourage families to check with their provider ahead of time. Your estimated patient portion is due at the time of service.

Yes, Sedation Is Safe for Your Child

It's a fair question to ask, and we want you to feel confident in the answer. Our team has specialized training specifically in caring for children under sedation and general anesthesia, and your child is monitored continuously throughout. We treat every option, from laughing gas to a hospital-based procedure, as the significant clinical decision it is.

Understanding Your Child’s Comfort Options

Laughing Gas

Gentle Inhaled Gas

A gentle, well-tolerated option that helps your child relax during treatment. It works quickly and wears off just as fast, so your child feels like themselves again shortly after their appointment.

Minimal Sedation

Gas & Medication

Your child takes a mild sedative (“relaxing juice”) by mouth before treatment that leaves them relaxed and drowsy, while still awake and able to respond. It's a comfortable option for children who need a bit more support than laughing gas alone.

General Anesthesia

Gas + Medication + IV

For more involved procedures, your child rests comfortably asleep under the care of our on-site anesthesiologist, right here in our office.

Hospital Dentistry

For children with more complex needs, we provide general anesthesia at Kaiser Oakland or UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, with your child cared for by the same doctors you already know.

What to Expect, Every Step of the Way

Every option follows the same caring process, so you and your child always know what's coming next.

A Conversation First

We'll get to know your child's needs and history, and recommend the option that fits their comfort level and procedure.

Getting Ready Together

We'll give you clear instructions ahead of time, including anything about eating or drinking beforehand, so you both feel ready on the day.

Comfortable Care, Start to Finish

Your child is monitored closely throughout treatment, following the plan we built together.

Support After the Visit

We'll walk you through what to expect afterward, including recovery time and any care that's specific to your child's option.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you decide if my child needs sedation?
We look at your child's age, comfort level, the procedure itself, and their health history together, and we'll always explain our thinking before moving forward.
Is laughing gas the same as anesthesia?
No, and it helps to know the difference. Laughing gas is a gentle option that helps your child relax while staying fully awake and responsive. General anesthesia means your child is completely asleep, and it's reserved for more involved procedures or specific medical needs.
What's the difference between oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia?
With oral conscious sedation, your child is relaxed and drowsy but awake and able to respond. With general anesthesia, they're comfortably asleep. We'll recommend whichever option fits your child's needs and the procedure being done.
Is general anesthesia safe for kids?
Yes. It's a significant clinical decision, and we treat it that way. Our on-site anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously, and our team has specialized training specific to pediatric sedation and anesthesia.
Why would my child need hospital-based care instead of in-office treatment?
Some medical conditions or especially complex procedures are best handled in a hospital setting. When that's the case, your child is still treated by our own doctors, at Kaiser Oakland or UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
Who monitors my child during sedation or anesthesia?
An anesthesiologist from our own team monitors your child closely throughout every comfort option we offer.
How should I prepare my child for a sedation appointment?
We'll give you specific instructions ahead of your child's appointment, including any guidance on eating or drinking beforehand, based on the option they'll be receiving.
How long does it take for laughing gas to wear off?
Laughing gas wears off quickly, often within minutes of your child breathing normal air again, so most kids feel back to themselves shortly after their appointment.
Will my child remember the procedure?
It depends on the option used. Laughing gas typically doesn't affect memory, while oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia often result in little to no memory of the procedure itself.
Does insurance cover sedation or anesthesia?
Coverage varies by plan and by the specific option used. We're glad to help you understand your benefits before your child's appointment.
